Hostage Situation In Jamaica Hills; Perp Arrested

Posted on March 16, 2015 by tribune in Top News

BY JORDAN GIBBONS Staff Writer

NYPD’s 107th Precinct responded quickly to a hostage situation on 168th Street in Jamaica Hills early Monday morning, and apprehended the perpetrator after several hours of negotiating without any serious injuries, according to Captain Paul Velarga, 107th’s commanding officer.

He said that a black male knocked on the door of one apartment, “brandishing a firearm and demanded money, currency” from the resident. Velarga said he believes the robber attained some money, but was not sure how much.

The man fled the home and ended up inside another apartment a few doors down, while the first victim locked their door and called 911.

Velarga said there was a unit nearby that responded quickly to the 911 call shortly after 8 a.m.

“He entered the residence and barricaded himself into that apartment,” Velarga said. “We then established a dialogue.”

Hostage negotiators were called in to talk the man out of the home that housed three family members.

The homes were directly across from the Jamaica Muslim Center. Akhter Hussain, the mosque’s general secretary, said there were many at the center witnessing the NYPD at work.

“The police came right away,” Hussain said. “They barricaded the street and they searched every house.”

Velarga said that the perpetrator eventually surrendered some time after 1 p.m. and was taken into custody at the 107th Precinct.

There was only one minor injury during the incident, Velarga said. A person in the first home bruised their hand when the perpetrator forced his way into the residence.

The investigation is ongoing.

QUEENS — An 18-year old told police that he was bound with duct tape and held for hours by a group of men in a Jamaica Hills home Wednesday night, before he managed to escape and call 911 the next morning, sources said.

The teen, who later stopped cooperating with investigators, initially told police that he went to the house on 168th Place, near Gothic Drive, around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, where he met with three other men.

The victim, who lives several blocks away, also told investigators that a verbal dispute broke out, which later turned physical, sources said.

The men then duct-taped him and held him through the night, the teen told investigators. He was also hit in the head, sources said.

He told police that he managed to free himself in the morning and ran to a nearby car service where he called 911, sources said.

The teen was later taken to Jamaica Hospital.

Police were questioning a man in his 20s in connection with the case, but as of Thursday afternoon no arrests have been made, sources said.

Cops shoot and kill Queens gunman who opened fire at NYPD: police

Cops shot a man dead in Queens after he fired on them Wednesday, an eyewitness and police sources said.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving calls that a 30-year-old white man fired a shot—seemingly unprovoked—into the ceiling of the SBS Hillside bar on Hillside Ave. and 168th St. in Jamaica around 9:15 p.m., according to a witness who was working at the bar at the time.

"The guy just snapped," said bouncer Eric Vincent, 45. "Everything changed in a split second. Everything was good, everybody was having a good time, and it all changed in a split second."

Vincent said the gunman, who he had never seen before, had been talking with a regular at the bar before he started shouting and pulled out a black pistol.

"The shooter was sitting there with Raymond, everybody was doing their thing—watching TV, listening to music—and all of a sudden the shooter tells Ray, 'Get away! Get away! Don't touch me!'

"Then he pulls a gun out and he's just aiming down for like half a minute, like letting everybody know he had it. Then he just raised up and shot the ceiling," Vincent recounted.

The bouncer said the gunman then ordered the patrons to leave and for Raymond to follow him.

"He yells, 'Everybody get out!' and then told Raymond to 'Come with me. Let's go.' Then he started walking to the door by himself, so I told Raymond to come to the back of the bar."

By that point, the bar's manager and several other people had already called police to report the unhinged shooter, Vincent said.

Responding officers quickly pulled up to the scene in both marked and unmarked patrol cars, according to Vincent.

"I told them he was wearing a blue jacket and ran up the hill and the cop said, 'Get in,' to help ID the guy."

As cops descended on the unidentified man from the north and south on 168th Pl. between Hillside and Highland Aves., pinching him between them, the man turned and fired a shot at them, Vincent and police sources said.

"He was in the middle and cops was coming up both ways and I guess he felt trapped and started shooting," Vincent said.

"I heard them yell, 'Shots fired! Shots fired!' over the radio," he said. "I was a little scared. I just crouched in the back seat and stayed down."

The cops chased the man a block toward Highland Ave. when he turned toward the officers again, according to police sources.

This time, the cops opened fire, hitting the man in the chest, the sources said.

He went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he died, the sources said.

A Glock 9-mm. handgun was recovered at the scene, according to the sources.

The officers were not injured, according to police. No one was injured at the bar
